Laser Hair Removal Q & A

How does laser hair removal work?

Dr. McKay chose the Emvera Diolux® laser platform as one of the industry leaders in laser hair removal. This system is a high powered 810 diode laser that delivers results in around half the time other lasers require.

To understand how laser hair removal works it helps to think about how your hair grows. Your body is covered in thousands of hair follicles. At the base of each follicle lies a root that’s fed by tiny blood vessels.

That root produces hair cells, which stack on top of one another and eventually exit through the other end of the hair follicle. Hair growth occurs in cycles, including phases of active growth, transition, and shedding.

Laser hair removal works by delivering laser energy into the follicles, where it’s converted into heat. That heat damages the hair root, preventing regrowth.

This process works best during the active growth phase, which is why it takes multiple treatments to eliminate hair in the treated area.

Is laser hair removal painful?

Many men and women describe the sensation of laser hair removal as something like the snap of a rubber band against your skin. Others report virtually no sensation at all.

Laser hair removal is not a painful process, but if you have especially sensitive skin, let Dr. McKay know. You can apply a topical anesthetic prior to your session to reduce sensation in the treatment area.

Is laser hair removal a good investment?

The upfront cost of laser hair removal may seem like a significant expense, but when you do the math, this treatment actually makes good financial sense. To begin, all those razors, depilatory creams, waxing strips, and trips to the salon are not free.

Those costs add up over time, and they never fully go away. Laser hair removal allows you to achieve soft, smooth skin without the expense and hassle of shaving, plucking, or waxing.

There’s also the value of your time to consider, as well as having to deal with razor rash or ingrown hairs.
